The influence of Africa and it’s culture is a global phenomenon, nowhere more evident than in music.
This annual concert, a highlight of the Apollo’s season, celebrates the best of today’s African music scene showcasing artists who have drawn from their roots for inspiration and transplanted them onto the global music landscape.
This year’s concert takes us on a musical excursion from desert blues of Niger with Bombino to the contagious rhythms of Zimbabwe’s Mokoomba to the smooth vibe of Alsarah & The Nubatones’ signature East African retro-pop to the experimental fusion of an up and comer who embodies the cool swag of Ghana’s hipster set, Jojo Abot.
AFRICA NOW!
Saturday, March 26 at 8PM
Bombino
Bombino is not your typical rock star — sporting traditional clothing from his native Ifoghas tribe, the Tuareg guitarist tells the story of his people with powerful songs of political uprising and freedom. He has faced a number of political struggles throughout his career, but Bombino never fails to keep the positive vibes flowing at his live shows, promoting peace and unity with his uplifting hits and incredible guitar skills. Whether he’s shredding out a lick on his electric or celebrating the spirit of his people,
Jojo Abot
Hypnotic…sultry…vulnerable…empowering. These words come to mind when first experiencing the music of Jojo Abot, the Ghanaian singer-songwriter who is poised to capture the ears of discerning listeners worldwide with her experimental blend of electronica, afrobeat, jazz, neo-soul, house and reggae.
Alsarah and The Nubatones
Alsarah & The Nubatones came together out of a collective love for Nubian music and a genuine belief that Soul transcends all cultural and linguistic barriers. Inspired by the pentatonic scale they blend a selection of Nubian ‘songs of return’ from the 1970s-today with original material and traditional music of central Sudan. Their set is a musical journey through diaspora and migration from an urban lens.
Mokoomba
Mokoomba is the hottest new blend of raw Afro-fusion energy that is setting dance floors ablaze throughout the world. They are a 6 piece band that plays a unique blend of Tonga and Luvale traditional rhythms fused with dashes of funk, ska and soukous. Hailing from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, the band has toured over 50 countries around the world and has won a few awards as well as appearing on Later with Jools Holland.
