In Africa, Oya (pronounced oh-yah) is the Yoruban Goddess of female leadership, persuasive charm, and transformation. In Brazil, she is known as Yansa.
She is the wild woman, the force of change; lightning, fire, tornadoes, earthquakes and storms of all kinds are ruled by Oya. This powerful force uses her machete, or sword of truth, to cut through stagnation and clear the way for new growth. She does what needs to be done.
Oya is known as a fierce warrior and strong protectress of women, who call on Her to settle disputes in their favor. When women find themselves in hard-to-resolve conflicts, she is the one to call on for protection.
Oya is a strict but compassionate mother; she will guide you but not do the work for you. She will give you a little time to cry and whine over your problems but then she expects you to pull yourself together and get back out there.
As a Crone Goddess She is a teacher of truth and a bringer of justice. She is the Water Goddess of the Niger River in Africa. She is also Queen of the Marketplace, a shrewd businesswoman and a witch who is comfortable with all occult subjects.
Oya has strong connections with the ancestors. She should be involved in any ancestor ceremony. As Queen of the cemetery, she maintains and keeps it holy. She is the sentinel between the realm life and death. She gives assistance and guidance to those when they make their final transition into the veils.
Meditate and take in Oya’s power during the wind, rain, snow and thunder storms, for She speaks to those who listen. She cleanses that which is sullied and prepares you to move onto the next chapter with strength, determination and UMPH!!!
